Qualcomm Announces New Snapdragon 4100 With Improved Features For Wear OS Watches

 

Qualcomm has announced two new Wear OS. These are Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus. These are the first major updates to the Qualcomm’s smart-watch platform since the year 2018. It is claimed that these new chips will have high speed with new and faster processor, better performance of GPU, camera, battery life, and memory.

 

Snapdragon Wear 3100, which was a minor update to Snapdragon 2100 in 2016, was the last major update in the Snapdragon wear lineup. Also, 2100 and 3100 have the same main processor. The new 4100 marks the concrete improvement in speed in the last four years for Wear OS.

 

The other big changes in the processor include a jump from 28nm process to 12nm, four A53 cores which are clocked at 1.7GHz. This change is a replacement to 3100’s A7 cores which were clocked at 1.1GHz which will improve the performance to more than 85%. The GPU is Adreno A504 which is two and a half times faster than the 3100, and has faster memory.

 

Qualcomm’s approach for 4100 series is a bit different and is shipping two SKU’s to the developers. Snapdragon 4100 Plus, which is the flagship model, like 3100 is a hybrid that has features of main SDM429w SoC and an updated version of QCC1110 which is the co-processor, which is always On. In case the developers do not need the always On feature, Qualcomm will offer a standard 4100 wear model which only offers SDM429w for them.  

 

The co-processor QCC1110, which handles the ambient display in smart-watches, is also getting improvements which include the ability of displaying vast colors upto 64,000 whereas 3100 could only show 16. It will also support various features in ’watch mode’ such as haptic feedback, alarms, continuous heart-rate tracking, alarms and many more which were previously done using the main processor. It will also have 25% better battery life because of the shift to the new 12nm CPU architecture with other technical improvements.

 

The company has started shipping it’s Wear 4100 and 4100 Plus chipsets to the hardware manufacturers. Mobvoi TicWatch model and Xiaotiancai kid friendly smartwatch will be featuring these new chips.
